Maysville Players Start New Season With Award-Winning Comedy

The 2nd Annual Fireman's Muster is set for September 13th at 9am at the Aberdeen River Park. September Promises To Be Full Of Activities

The annual Saint Patrick Fall Festival is September 5th through the 7th. There will be games, auctions, food and live music.


The Maysville Rotary Club Horse Show is September 6th at 6pm at the Germantown Fairgrounds.


The 5th annual Pig Out On Market Street is September 13th starting at noon on Market Street in downtown Maysville.


And the Simon Kenton Festival is September 20th and 21st in Historic Washington, featuring demonstrations of frontier life and activities for the family.

Blue Licks Commemoration Coming Up

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park will commemorate the Battle of Blue Licks, the last battle of the Revolutionary War, August 16th and 17th. The event features battle re-enactments, living history programs, hands-on activities and musical entertainment. With gas prices still in the stratosphere, the weekend offers a great time close to home.

Seussical Breaks Box Office Records

The Maysville Players first season under Producing Director Mike Thomas went out with a roar, as Sunday's showing of "Seussical-The Musical'' broke box office records for the season. Building on the success of "Lend Me A Tenor," "Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap" and "Nunsense," the summer teen production not only showcased the incredible young talent we have in this community, but also led to lines around the block for Sunday's last performance. Thomas says he has selected the plays for next season, and will announce them soon. A good way to ensure your tickets for productions is to become a Washington Opera House patron. Tobacco Festival Preparations Underway

The 27th annual Ohio Tobacco Festival is August 21st through the 24th in downtown Ripley. This year's raffle grand prize is the choice of a John Deere Gator, a John Deere lawn tractor or $4000 cash. Naturally, there will be the usual music, food and fun--make your plans now!

Governor Beshear Is Heading To Town

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear will be in Mason and Fleming counties Monday. The Governor will be at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center at 1:30pm to make a presentation, then will head to the Flemingsburg Industrial Park 2 on KY 11 for a ribbon-cutting at 2:10pm. You are, of course, invited to attend.

The local chapter of the NAACP Youth Council recently received their charter, and they are working on the 5th Annual Back To School Block Party Saturday. The party will be held from 5 to 8:30pm at Rotary Park. There will be free food and entertainment, music, giveaways and more. WFTM Soft 96 will broadcast live from the block party from 5 to 7pm.

Maysville To Host Piano Competition Winner Next Week

The Maysville Players play host to Franz Liszt prize recipient Anzhelika Fuks next week at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Maysville. The performance will begin at 5:30pm Wednesday, July 30 at the church, located at 21 West 3rd Street in downtown Maysville.
The Hungarian-Ukrainian native won Third Prize at the 8th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in April.
In April of 2007 the Maysville Players hosted Yingdi Sun, First Prize winner at the 7th International Competition.
At the invitation of Russia’s renowned Musical Olympus Festival, Fuks will debut with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. She has also been invited to play at the Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile, Italy, and the Liszt in Weimar Piano Academy. Her schedule for 2009 includes, amongst other things, an extensive concert tour through China and South America.
Anzhelika received her first musical training at the local music school in Užhorod, Ukraine. In 2002, she attended the city’s conservatory. In 2005, Anzhelika moved to Hungary to study at Budapest’s Franz Liszt Academy (where she is still a student).
In international piano competitions, Fuks won First Prize in Kyiv-Vorsel, Grand Prix at the Zakarpatija Festival of Užhorod, Second Prize at the Donetsk Competition in honour of Serge Prokofiev’s 110th birthday, and First Prize at the 2008 Yamaha Competition in Budapest.
The concert is free and open to the public.

Lofton To Play In Turkey

Former University of Tennessee and Mason County star Chris Lofton has signed a one-year contract with a professional basketball team in Mersin, Turkey. Lofton's agent, Eric Fleischer, confirmed the deal, but would not disclose financial terms. Lofton's new team, the Mersin Metrocity Municipality Sport Club, finished tied for ninth in the 16-team Turkish Basketball League last year with a 13-17 record. After not being selected in the NBA Draft last month, Lofton played for the Denver Nuggets' summer team in Las Vegas. Lofton averaged seven minutes per game and had nine points and no assists in four games. Lofton holds the Southeastern Conference's career record for three-point baskets with 431.

Parade Highlights Todays Lions Club Fair

The Tollesboro Lions Parade is today at 2pm. Line-up for the parade begins at 1pm on the fairgrounds. The parade will feature floats and exhibits, antique cars, horses, Shriners and more. Cash prizes will be awarded. A bicycle decorating contest will also take place at 1 o'clock Sunday with 3 age classes.

5K Race Added To This Year's Balloon Event

A new event has been added to this year’s Buffalo Trace Balloon Race. Bodies in Motion will present the Buffalo Trace 5K race at 8am Saturday, August 9th.
The race will begin at Maysville Community and Technical College and follow Martha Comer Drive. Race organizer Tina Rigdon-Hester says the 5K Race “is a great course with rolling hills. We will have the YMCA Wildcat cheerleaders throughout the course cheering on all the runners. We hope to make this an annual event, so walkers, runners and ghost runners are invited.”
There are several age divisions. Advance registration is $20, or $25 on race day. Each participant will receive a shirt. Tollesboro Lions Club Fair Starts Tonight

The 51st edition of the Tollesboro Lions Club Fair begins today with the saddle horse show and tug tractor pull. Weigh-in for the tug tractor pull is 5:30pm. The horse show starts at 7:30 and features 25 different classes. The fair is held at the Tollesboro Fairgrounds.

The Buffalo Trace Ride For St. Jude’s Research Hospital is August 2. Registration will be at the Maysville Suzuki at the Corner of KY 9 and KY1448 (Maple Leaf Road). Registration begins at 10am, with Kickstands up at 11:30am.

Idol Worshippers--Here's Your Chance

American Karaoke--sorry, American IDOL--will hold two rounds of auditions in Louisville next month. The initial round of preliminary auditions will take place July 21st at Freedom Hall. Follow-up auditions will take place in early September at Churchill Downs. American Idol is looking for men and women 16 to 28 years old as of July 15, 2008, who are eligible to work in the US. Internationally renowned comedian impressionist Rich Little will be in town in September as part of the 10th annual Rosemary Clooney Music Festival. Luminaria Lights Will Shine On The Fourth

Thanks, as usual, to the generosity of the city, the Relay For Life luminaria ceremony (rained out on the 13th of this month) will be held as part of Maysville's Fourth of July celebration. The ceremony will be held at 9pm at Rotary Park, followed by the fireworks. A great time to remember and honor those who have fought cancer, while at the same time remembering and honoring those who fought to keep our country free.

Back From Stay-cation!

A week off and ready to go! Thanks and congratulations to everyone who made the Relay For Life of Mason County a massive success, even though it was stormed out by 7:30pm. Weather notwithstanding, a good time was had by all, and around $60,000 was raised for cancer research, awareness and support programs. The County Fair concept was spot on, with (as usual) amazing support from Maysville Public Works and the Rec Park. I say it all the time on the air--the city's support is the bedrock on which all of the events you enjoy every year is based upon. There are none better.

MCTC Summer Scholarship Scramble A Month Away

The annual Summer Scholarship Scramble, presented by Maysville Community & Technical College with the support of about every person and business in the Ohio Valley, is July 12th at 8am at Laurel Oaks Golf Club on US 62 in Maysville. The cost us $65 and is tax deductible. Fee includes greens fees, cart rental, continental breakfast and lunch. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. There will also be door prize drawings. Since it's start 16 years ago, the scramble has provided scholarships for many students in the area. Maysville Uncorks For Annual Wine Event

Maysville Uncorked, presented by the Maysville Players and the city of Maysville, is Saturday on middle Market Street in downtown Maysville. The event features wineries from across the region, as well as businesses with Kentucky products. Wine tasting begins at 4pm. This year’s musical entertainment is Chicago singing sensation Peter Oprisko, making a return to town after a successful performance at the Washington Opera House last year. The concert begins at 8pm.

Lucky Friday The 13th--Relay Is Here!

This year's Relay For Life of Mason County has been in the making since September 17th of last year. Departing from the regular Relay format, this year's event--with the theme "County Fair"--has teams hosting games and food booths, with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. There will be musical entertainment, a salute to cancer survivors, and the luminaria ceremony. With the theme "Food, Fun and Fighting Cancer," how can you not have a good time. CASA Playhouse Giveaway Underway

The Court Appointed Special Advocates for children program for Mason, Bracken and Fleming County has begun their annual CASA playhouse giveaway. This year's houses are built by the Building Trades Construction Program at MCTC, the FFA at Fleming County High School and the employees of WalMart in Maysville. Chances for the houses are $2 each. Winners will be drawn August 2nd at the Germantown Fair.

EPT Plans Mock Disaster For Monday

Emerson Power Transmission will conduct mock disaster exercises Monday at 7:30am and 8:30pm. According to a plant spokesperson, the exercise will involve a simulated train derailment at the site. Numerous emergency vehicles will be responding to the area. So don't freak when you see responders heading to East Second Street. Again, the Emerson mock disaster is scheduled for Monday at 7:30am and 8:30pm.

Fleming County Relay For Life Is This Weekend

It's going to be sunny and warm Saturday--perfect weather to go to the Fleming County Relay For Life. This year's Relay is at Mandolin Farm, 387 Owens Lane in Flemingsburg. Kick-off is at 9am tomorrow. There will be a baby show, cornhole tournament, music, the luminaria ceremony and more. Relay is an overnight event to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost the cancer fight, and raise money for the fight against cancer. Mason County's Relay, the County Fair, is next Friday at 4. Turn out, have fun, and help fight cancer!

Annual Chrome & Cruise Has New Location

Lugnutz Hot Rod Club will have their annual Chrome & Cruise Saturday, June 21st at the Maysville-Mason County Rec Park. There will be dash plaques and free gifts for the first 75 entries, and free lunch will be provided for registered participants. Spectator choice trophies will be awarded. Antique Machinery Show Only 3 Weeks Away

Mason Co Antique Machinery Show Inc. will have their 22nd Annual show on June 20-22, 2008 at Moran's Motosports Park located on the AA Hwy outside of Maysville Ky. Friday night will feature a diesel truck and tractor pull starting at 6PM. Saturday will feature tractor games, silent auction, raffle, cake walk, grocery bingo and a garden tractor pull starting at 7pm. Auditions for Seussical the Musical—this year's Maysville Players summer youth production--is today and tomorrow. It's open to all in grades 6 and up. There are 20 roles….including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos and other Dr. Seuss favorites. All roles require singing. Auditions are at 3 p.m. at the Opera Theatre, 116 West Second Street. Please prepare a short song of your choice. Relay Is Coming Up, And Teams Are Still Raising Money

Beta Sigma Phi is sponsoring a yard sale Saturday, June 7 to benefit the Relay For Life. The sale will be held from 8 to noon at the corner of Parry Lane and US 68. They will accept donated items Friday from 6 to 7pm. Most items will be sold by the bag for a donation. The Relay For Life is June 13th at the Maysville-Mason County Rec Park.

MSU To Host Adoption Fair

There will be an adoption fair at Morehead State University June 22 from 1 to 4pm in the Adron Doran University Center. Everyone is invited to talk to the different adoption agencies, both domestic and foreign. If you have ever considered adoption or just want to lean more about the program then please attend.

Art Start Your Summer

The Ohio River Valley artists Guild Summer Art Camp starts June 16 and runs through the 20th. There will be two daily sessions: a morning session from 9 to noon and the afternoon session from 1 to 4. The camp is offered to children age 7-14. The camp will be held at 504 Duke of York Street in Washington. Contact the Guild for more information.

Mine Rescue Contest Set For June

The Southeast Central Kentucky Mine Rescue Association will host a mine rescue contest in Maysville June 4-6. The event will feature experienced and novice teams competing in mine rescue, bench, gas tests and first aid. Trophies will be presented at a banquet after the contest. Offices Closed For Monday Holiday

The following Mason County Offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday: Judge-Executive's office, Treasurer's office, Sheriff's office, Road Department, Maysville-Mason County landfill, Recycling Center, and the Garbage Collections office. Mason County garbage will be picked up as normal. City of Maysville offices will be closed Monday. Maysville transit service will run Monday. Trash service for Monday will be picked up on Tuesday.

Rec Park Pool Opening Delayed

The Maysville-Mason County Rec Park pool will not open this weekend because of mechanical problems. The opening date for the pool has been pushed to the weekend of May 31st.

Legends Headline Downtown Block Party Friday Night

The Legends Rock N Roll Comedy Show is going to be one of the highlights of a block party Friday night on middle Market Street as part of the Buffalo Trails MultiSport Races. According to their website, "The harmonies that characterize the music of the 50's, 60's and early 70's are accentuated by the powerful and precise voices of THE LEGENDS. Combined with high energy choreography, professional costumes, funny props, comedy and audience participation. MultiSport Volunteer Meeting Tonight

This weekend is the annual Buffalo Trails MultiSport Race in Maysville and surrounding environs. The race consists of a Triathlon (swim, bike and run), a Duathlon (run, bike and run) and a 5K run with a portion of the proceeds going to the Relay For Life. You don't have to be a hardbody to take part, either. Volunteers are needed for the event. A meeting is going to be held tonight at 7pm at the Mason County Extension Office. African Choir To Perform In Maysville Tonight

23 Members of a United Methodist children's choir from Uganda, Africa will perform tonight at Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Maysville at 7. The concert is free and open to the public. While they are here, the choir will get a taste of Maysville hospitality with trips to area schools and museums.

Rain Rain Go Away--At Least Until We Get These Games Played

The 39th district baseball and softball tournament games were rained out Monday and have been rescheduled for today. In the softball tournament at the Maysville-Mason County Rec Park, Mason County plays Saint Patrick at 5:30pm. In the baseball tournament at Bracken County, Saint Patrick plays Augusta at 5:30pm, followed by Mason County against Bracken County at 7:30pm. If you can't make it to the game, you can hear it on WFTM AM 1240.

Nuns On The Run--To The Washington Opera House

The Nuns are ready for you! The Maysville Players production of the hit musical comedy "Nunsense" begins its run tonight at the Washington Opera House. Drug House Odyssey Starts Today

The 7th annual Drug House Odyssey is today and tomorrow at Maysville Community & Technical College. The Odyssey is a live drama delivering a message about drinking and driving. The drama will be open to the public today from 6 to 7:30pm. It will be presented to around 900 high school students tomorrow. If you want to see the horrors of impaired driving without having to live through it, this is a powerful way to get the message across, to both youth and adults.

Next Gallery Hop In The Works

Spring Fling Is Saturday

The Mason County Homemakers will present their annual SPRING FLING, Saturday, May 3rd from 8 am until 2 pm. At the Mason County Extension Office.There will be a spring flower sale presented by Cropper’s Greenhouse, annual blacktop rummage sale and a bake sale with over 100 items to be sold. Proceeds from the Blacktop sale go to Ovarian Cancer Research, the flower sales go to the Scholarship fund and the bake sale goes to promote Mason County Homemakers projects.

Audrey's Back-And She's Hungry

"Plant food" takes on a whole new meaning this weekend as the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington musical "Little Shop of Horrors" takes the stage. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are $10 each and are on sale in the high school office. The show is a comedy, but it gets a PG rating for some language and mild violence.

Go Royals!

The Mason County Royals Concert Band earned a Distinguished Rating at the KMEA District 8 Concert Band Festival. This is the fifth year in a row that the concert band has earned a Distinguished Rating at this event, and the second time that they have received a Distinguished rating from all four adjudicators. The band will next perform at the KMEA State Concert Band Festival in early May. The band will present its spring Pops Concert on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in Fields Auditorium on the campus of Maysville Community and Technical College.

Rehearsals are underway for the Maysville Players newest production, Nunsense. The cast features Barbara Zweigart as Sister Mary Regina, Christy Berry as Sister Hubert, Catherine Clarke as Sister Mary Amnesia, Erin Linn Jones as Sister Mary Leo and Barbara Goldman as Sister Robert Anne, The Little Sisters of Hoboken. Directed by Washington Opera House Executive Director Mike Thomas, the musical comedy has spawned numerous revivals, as well as several sequels. Show dates are May 15-25. Career Craze Coming To MCTC

Career Craze 2008 will be held June 2-6 from 9 to 2 at Maysville Community & Technical College. This year's program for 6th to 8th graders will feature 14 career tracks. Students will be able to explore careers in medical, environmental, agriculture/horticulture, auto mechanics, culinary arts, manufacturing, early childhood education and more. There is no cost to attend the program, but students need to apply by May 15th to be accepted in the program. Illinois Earthquake Felt In Mason County

An earthquake in Illinois was felt by early risers in the WFTM listening area. The US geological survey says the magnitude 5.4 quake was centered near West Salem, Illinois, or about 40 miles northwest of Evansville, Indiana. the earthquake occurred at 5:30 this morning. There were no immediate reports of injuries. According to the survey's web site, the area where the earthquake occured borders the more seismically active New Madrid seismic zone on the north and west. the seismic region covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and stretches from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis. The largest historical earthquake in the region was also a magnitude 5.4, and damaged southern Illinois in 1968. the geological survey says Moderately damaging earthquakes strike somewhere in the region each decade or two, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once or twice a year.

Derby Time! Doggie Derby, That Is

Release the hounds! The Women's Crisis Center and The Humane Society of Buffalo Trace are co-hosting the 2nd Annual "Doggie Derby" Dog Walk on Saturday, April 26th, 2008, at the Mason County Rec Park. Registration begins at 2:00 p.m. and the walk begins at 3:00 p.m. The Doggie Derby (done in the style of the Kentucky Derby) benefits The Women's Crisis Center's pet protection program, and The Humane Society of Buffalo Trace's outreach programs. These programs provides much needed shelter for pets , health and wellness information, spay/neuter assistance. Early registration is $15 and registration the day of the event is $25.00. MultiSport Race One Month Away

Senior Citizen Prom Fun Time For All

Russ Curtis is known as one of the most innovative teachers in this region. His "Pay it forward" approach to teaching allows students to learn, while at the same time giving back to the community. One of his best programs is the annual Senior Citizen Prom. The prom brings area senior citizens and youth together for a great evening of dinner, dancing and conversation. All's Fair At This Year's Relay For Life

Teams for this year's Relay For Life of Mason County met last night, and it looks like June 13th is shaping up to be a memorable evening! The theme this year is County Fair, and instead of camps, each Relay team will offer fair games and/or food. From dunking booths to cornhole to football tosses to cake walks. From hot dogs to ribeyes to ice balls to cotton candy. All to help fight cancer. This year's Relay will be held at the Mason County Rec Park. The Saint Patrick School 2008 Spring Gala and performance of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is a couple of weeks away. Antique Expo On The Way!

The Washington Lions Club will sponsor their 14th annual Maysville Antique and Craft Expo April 26th from 9 to 5 and April 27th from 10 to 4. The expo will be held at the King Burley Center off the AA Highway. There will be over 125 booths of antiques and more. The Lions Club will offer free eye exams. Food and beverages will be available. The Hills Are Alive--Sorry, Wrong Play

The Mason County Concert Choir and Orchestra are going medieval on audiences this month with the production of Lerner and Loewe's "Camelot." Showtimes are April 18th and 19th at 7:30pm and April 20th at 2:15pm at the downtown high school auditorium on East 2nd Street. All auditorium seating is reserved and all tickets are $12. Miniatures Draw Crowds From Across The Globe

Artisans, collectors and fans from across the world are in Maysville this week to celebrate the unveiling of the Kathleen Savage Browning Miniatures collection at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center on Sutton Street. If everyone across the planet has beaten you to see it, here's why you need to stop in for a visit: The 3,200-square-foot exhibit hall has miniatures ranging from our own Cox Building to Princess Diana's Spencer House, accurate to the last tiny detail.
