The Maysville Players first season under Producing Director Mike Thomas went out with a roar, as Sunday's showing of "Seussical-The Musical'' broke box office records for the season. Building on the success of "Lend Me A Tenor," "Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap" and "Nunsense," the summer teen production not only showcased the incredible young talent we have in this community, but also led to lines around the block for Sunday's last performance. Maysville To Host Piano Competition Winner Next Week

The Maysville Players play host to Franz Liszt prize recipient Anzhelika Fuks next week at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Maysville. The performance will begin at 5:30pm Wednesday, July 30 at the church, located at 21 West 3rd Street in downtown Maysville.
The Hungarian-Ukrainian native won Third Prize at the 8th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in April.
In April of 2007 the Maysville Players hosted Yingdi Sun, First Prize winner at the 7th International Competition.
At the invitation of Russia’s renowned Musical Olympus Festival, Fuks will debut with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. She has also been invited to play at the Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile, Italy, and the Liszt in Weimar Piano Academy. Her schedule for 2009 includes, amongst other things, an extensive concert tour through China and South America.
Anzhelika received her first musical training at the local music school in Užhorod, Ukraine. In 2002, she attended the city’s conservatory. In 2005, Anzhelika moved to Hungary to study at Budapest’s Franz Liszt Academy (where she is still a student).
In international piano competitions, Fuks won First Prize in Kyiv-Vorsel, Grand Prix at the Zakarpatija Festival of Užhorod, Second Prize at the Donetsk Competition in honour of Serge Prokofiev’s 110th birthday, and First Prize at the 2008 Yamaha Competition in Budapest.
The concert is free and open to the public.

Former University of Tennessee and Mason County star Chris Lofton has signed a one-year contract with a professional basketball team in Mersin, Turkey. Lofton's agent, Eric Fleischer, confirmed the deal, but would not disclose financial terms. Lofton's new team, the Mersin Metrocity Municipality Sport Club, finished tied for ninth in the 16-team Turkish Basketball League last year with a 13-17 record. After not being selected in the NBA Draft last month, Lofton played for the Denver Nuggets' summer team in Las Vegas. Lofton averaged seven minutes per game and had nine points and no assists in four games. Lofton holds the Southeastern Conference's career record for three-point baskets with 431.

A new event has been added to this year’s Buffalo Trace Balloon Race. Bodies in Motion will present the Buffalo Trace 5K race at 8am Saturday, August 9th.
The race will begin at Maysville Community and Technical College and follow Martha Comer Drive. Race organizer Tina Rigdon-Hester says the 5K Race “is a great course with rolling hills. We will have the YMCA Wildcat cheerleaders throughout the course cheering on all the runners. We hope to make this an annual event, so walkers, runners and ghost runners are invited.”
There are several age divisions. Advance registration is $20, or $25 on race day. Each participant will receive a shirt. A week off and ready to go! Thanks and congratulations to everyone who made the Relay For Life of Mason County a massive success, even though it was stormed out by 7:30pm. Weather notwithstanding, a good time was had by all, and around $60,000 was raised for cancer research, awareness and support programs. The County Fair concept was spot on, with (as usual) amazing support from Maysville Public Works and the Rec Park. I say it all the time on the air--the city's support is the bedrock on which all of the events you enjoy every year is based upon. There are none better.

The annual Summer Scholarship Scramble, presented by Maysville Community & Technical College with the support of about every person and business in the Ohio Valley, is July 12th at 8am at Laurel Oaks Golf Club on US 62 in Maysville. The cost us $65 and is tax deductible. Fee includes greens fees, cart rental, continental breakfast and lunch. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. There will also be door prize drawings. Since it's start 16 years ago, the scramble has provided scholarships for many students in the area. Relay is an overnight event to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost the cancer fight, and raise money for the fight against cancer. Oh, the places you'll go! Auditions for Seussical Jr—this year's Maysville Players summer youth production--is next week. It's open to all in grades 6 and up. There are 20 roles….including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos and other Dr. Seuss favorites. All roles require singing. Auditions are June 4 and 5 at 3 p.m. at the Opera Theatre, 116 West Second Street. Please prepare a short song of your choice. You will also be asked to read from the script and complete a simple movement audition. Production dates are July 31, August 1, 2 and 3. See you there!

Mine Rescue Contest Set For June

The Southeast Central Kentucky Mine Rescue Association will host a mine rescue contest in Maysville June 4-6. The event will feature experienced and novice teams competing in mine rescue, bench, gas tests and first aid. Trophies will be presented at a banquet after the contest. MultiSport Volunteer Meeting Tonight

This weekend is the annual Buffalo Trails MultiSport Race in Maysville and surrounding environs. The race consists of a Triathlon (swim, bike and run), a Duathlon (run, bike and run) and a 5K run with a portion of the proceeds going to the Relay For Life. You don't have to be a hardbody to take part, either. Volunteers are needed for the event. A meeting is going to be held tonight at 7pm at the Mason County Extension Office. African Choir To Perform In Maysville Tonight

23 Members of a United Methodist children's choir from Uganda, Africa will perform tonight at Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Maysville at 7. The concert is free and open to the public. The 39th district baseball and softball tournament games were rained out Monday and have been rescheduled for today. In the softball tournament at the Maysville-Mason County Rec Park, Mason County plays Saint Patrick at 5:30pm. In the baseball tournament at Bracken County, Saint Patrick plays Augusta at 5:30pm, followed by Mason County against Bracken County at 7:30pm. If you can't make it to the game, you can hear it on WFTM AM 1240.

The 7th annual Drug House Odyssey is today and tomorrow at Maysville Community & Technical College. The Odyssey is a live drama delivering a message about drinking and driving. The drama will be open to the public today from 6 to 7:30pm. It will be presented to around 900 high school students tomorrow. If you want to see the horrors of impaired driving without having to live through it, this is a powerful way to get the message across, to both youth and adults.
